When Matt and Kate met in San Francisco, he was a successful stock broker and she was a former academic, married to someone else. Both felt trapped in lives that left too little space for joy or passion. Matt asked Kate to join him as a co-producer and vocalist on his solo album; she agreed, and they began to think they should explore a more permanent partnership—both musically and romantically. Feeling called to take bold risks, they took a long look at their lives and steered hard left toward their dreams, leaving a marriage, careers, and their homes in the process.
